Generational support for the next 50 years of an American masterpiece

Fifty years ago, Edith Rosenwald Stern culminated a lifetime of sharing and serving community when she bequeathed Longue Vue House and Gardens, the home she had built with husband Edgar Stern and creative partner Ellen Shipman, as a permanent public resource.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of Edith’s founding gift, we are asking key stakeholders and legacy supporters to consider generational support of $50,000 or above between 2026 and 2030. In addition to honoring and furthering Edith’s vision today, your commitment of $50,000 for the 50th anniversary will help to build a preservation fund to sustain Longue Vue for future generations.

50 for 50 gifts can be customized according to your priorities and timeline, with a range of possible multi-year structures and final payments requested by December 31, 2030.

The following are just a few of the ways your $50,000 pledge might be designated for priority impact over multiple years:

Sample 1

  • Annual Shipman Circle membership ($2,500; includes participation in selecting annual preservation project), 2026-2030 
  • Annual Design Symposium “Preservationist” sponsorship ($5,000), 2026-2030 
  • $12,500 additional payment in 2029, toward the Preservation Fund

  •  $10,000 annual unrestricted donation, 2026-2030

Sample 2

  • Annual Games in the Gardens “Racquet and Julep” sponsorship ($5,000), 2026-2030 
  • Annual Family Equality Day “Green” sponsorship ($2,500), 2026-2030 
  • Annual Twilight at Longue Vue season sponsorship ($2,500), 2026-2030 

Sample 4

  • Sponsorship of one major preservation initiative of ≥$50,000, to be completed by 2030. Budgets will vary according to project.

Longue Vue 50th Anniversary: Goals and Vision

Our vision for 2030 is a historically preserved Longue Vue that is accessible to all and sustainable for the long term. Specific goals include:

  • A Preservation Fund of $5 million to support consistent, proactive historic preservation for our second half-century
  • Preserved and restored gardens and house interiors, true to Shipman’s design vision and honoring contributions by creative partners including Caroline Dormon and William and Geoffrey Platt
  • National recognition of Longue Vue as a destination for 20th-century American design
