Now Open: Small Expressions
August 11 – October 10, 2026
The Handweavers Guild of America presents Small Expressions, a juried exhibition of small-scale contemporary fiber art. On view at Longue Vue in the Playhouse from August 11 to October 10, 2026. Small Expressions is included with the purchase of gardens admission.
Small Expressions is the Handweavers Guild of America’s annual juried exhibition celebrating contemporary small-scale fiber art. Entries do not exceed 15 inches in any direction and were completed within the last two years. Artists work across traditional and nontraditional materials—weaving, basketry, bead weaving, embroidery, felting, and mixed media—bringing intricacy, intimacy, and visual impact to an intentionally compact scale. The exhibition aims to broaden appreciation for fiber art and to create exhibition opportunities for artists working in this medium.
Pattern and Place: Historic Wall Coverings of Longue Vue
March 6 – December 31, 2026
In Pattern and Place, we explore how bold florals, natural motifs, and immersive panoramas became architectural tools within Shipman’s masterful design vision, documenting her close personal and creative partnership with the Sterns, and showcasing her mature work as one of the last great planned estates of the Country Place Era.
The wall coverings of four historic rooms—the Reception Room, the Dining Room, the Upper Hall, and the Sleeping Porch—are explored in detail, providing more information about how their designs define the character of the home. We are honored to partner with Barrie Benson and contemporary designers at Peg Norriss on this exhibit, thus opening new conversations about how wall coverings—past and present—define the character of a home.
