Lucy C. Roussel Discovery Garden
The Discovery Garden invites children to explore concepts of design and gardening relevant to Louisiana ecosystems and the values inherent in the Longue Vue vision established 100 years ago.
As a part of our Centennial Renewal Campaign, we are working to update our displays and installations in this space for today’s children and families who are eager to learn and explore in our historic setting. This hands-on, interactive garden established in 1998 is inspired by the Sterns’ commitment to education and the natural environment and designed for children of all ages and their families. Pollinator stations, native plants, seasonal edibles, and insects are key areas of focus.
The Discovery Garden today serves as a home base for many of our children’s educational programs. Our early childhood enrichment program, Sprouts, meets twice monthly in the fall and spring seasons to provide children under 5 and their parents with a space for free play, garden exploration, and hands-on learning through craft, song, and other guided group activities. For students ages 5 to 1o, our Kids Garden Club allows for a deeper dive into organic gardening techniques. This program has transitioned in the past year from an after-school program to a weekend-based format where students can practice their gardening skills, create nature-based art, and enhance their connection to the natural world. The Discovery Garden also serves as a space for children’s birthday celebrations, school field trips, and Girl Scout trips.
